Autism Assessments (Easy Read)

What is Autism?

Autism is sometimes called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Having autism means that you think and feel differently to lots of other people. It does not mean that you are broken or less good. It can lead to problems if a place is not set up in a helpful way.

There are 3 main ways that autism can make things harder.

Being with other people

People with autism can find it hard to make friends. They don’t always know what other people are feeling. They can find it hard to know if people are lying or joking.

People with autism can get really upset or angry all of a sudden and not always know why.

Only liking certain things

Some people with autism have one special thing that they want to do or talk about all the time. Some people really like trains or anime or horses. They can get annoyed when they are not able to talk or think about those things.

Problems with light and noise

Everyone has things they don’t like. Lots of people with autism don’t like loud noises, bright lights, some textures or tastes. This can mean that it’s hard for them to go into busy places. It might mean that they only eat the same foods on repeat.

What else might it be?

There are other things that might seem like Autism. People with anxiety or worry can have feelings that are like Autism.

ADHD

People with ADHD can have a hard time with remembering. They can feel like they are not paying attention. They do lots of things without thinking. They have one big interest but get bored and find a different one quickly

You can see more information on ADHD here.

How do I find out if I have Autism?

You can ask your doctor. They will book you in for a test. This is usually best. It’s free. You might have to wait a long time for this.

If you are in a hurry, you can pay a company for a test. You should make sure that your doctor says that the company you choose is a good one. You should check that the person doing the test is a doctor as well.

What happens if RRJ Therapy tests me?

We will do a test for you or your child. Your child must be 8 years old or older.

Children

· We will have a phone call and talk about the test. You can decide if you would like us to test your child for autism.

· We will meet with your child at our office. We will get to know them.

· We will then talk to you and anyone else you would like to bring. This will take one or two hours.

· We will then meet your child again and test them by playing some games and doing some puzzles. These are not hard and they can’t fail.

· We will then talk to you and say if we think your child has autism.

· If they do have autism, we can write a letter to give to your doctor

· The letter will talk about ways that you and school can help your child.

Adults
